Plastic Bag Recycling Program Kicks Off

The Streets Division announced the start up of the plastic bag recycling program. The drop off program will start with nine sites with at least four more sites to be added in the coming weeks. With the start of the drop off program, most clean plastic bags are banned from disposal in Madison refuse carts and dumpsters. "We are very pleased to get this program started," said Madison recycling coordinator George Dreckmann. "We hope that Madison residents will take advantage of the new program and recycle as many of their plastic bags as possible." The new drop off program was a result of the nationwide movement to ban or recycle plastic grocery bags. In addition to plastic grocery bags the new program will take the following plastic bags; Most Plastic Bags From Retailers Dry Cleaning Bag Softener Salt Bags Newspaper Delivery Bags Ice Cube Bags Plastic Film from Beverage Cases Plastic Air Pillow Packaging. Material that will not be taken includes Black or Dark Colored Bags Drawstring Bags Food Wrap Meat Wrap Prepackaged Produce Bags Bags From Inside Cereal and Cracker Boxes Bubble Wrap All bags must be empty, dry and clean. The City of Madison's plastic bags drops off locations are as follows: Streets Division Self Help Drop Off Centers East: 4602 Sycamore Av. South: 1501 W. Badger Rd West: 402 South Point Rd Other City Sites Glenway Golf Course Waste Oil Site Monona Golf Course Waste Oil Site Warner Park Community Recreation Center City Program Participants Aldi Stores 3925 Lien Rd 8222 Watts Rd. University Bookstore 713 State St In addition to the drop off sites in the City of Madison program, there are at least 21 retailers that recycle bags.
