Night Time Street Sweeping Begins, Winter Parking Restrictions End

Nighttime Street Sweeping Underway The City of Madison, Streets Division has begun its annual night street sweeping program. Crews will begin work at 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday evenings. The program will continue for one month. "Our night sweeping program is vital to our efforts to clean up our streets at the end of winter," Streets Division spokesperson George Dreckmann said. "Every year we put down thousands of tons of sand to keep our streets passable. Now we have to get this material and other debris picked up to protect our lakes and streams." The Streets Division has nine street sweepers. The night sweeping allows the Streets Division to operate this equipment 16 hours each day. The goal is to sweep every street in the city at least twice during the spring-cleaning program. "In 2008 we swept up over 6,700 tons of debris during the spring," Dreckmann said. Alternate Side Parking Ends The City of Madison's alternate side parking restrictions came to an end at midnight on March 15th. Regular winter parking restrictions will resume at 1 a.m. on Sunday November 15th. "The Streets Division does have the ability to declare a Snow Emergency at any time of the year should weather conditions warrant," Dreckmann said. "Residents should be aware that alternate side parking restrictions could be put back into effect if we get a significant spring snow storm." Should a Snow emergency be declared the Streets Division will notify residents via the news media, the Snow Emergency Hotline 261-9111, and via e-mail and text messages. Residents can still sign up to get an e-mail and/or a text message whenever the City declares a snow emergency by going to www.cityofmadison.com/winter and signing up.
