Storm Clean Up Plan Announced

Staff Added for Brush Collection

The Streets Division is planning to assign extra crews to brush collection and work overtime to clean up tree limbs and branches brought down by last night's wind storm. The added crews will also work on the backlog of brush that is at the curb awaiting pick up. "Crews from Forestry and Streets have been working to clean up storm damage caused by last night's wind storm," Madison recycling coordinator George Dreckmann said. "We have focused on opening up streets and removing downed street trees and limbs that have been blocking sidewalks and fallen on private property. We will continue our efforts throughout out the day and into the week end if necessary." "Once we have completed those efforts we will turn our attention to assisting residents with the cleanup of their properties," Dreckmann said. "We will be assigning as many crews as possible to collect brush and those crews will be working ten hour days for the next two weeks as well as working Saturday June 8th." The cleanup plan will allow residents to clear storm damage on their properties this week end and get the material to the curb for collection. The extra crews will concentrate on areas with large amounts of storm damage while regular brush collection will continue. After the storm damage has been cleaned up, the extra crews will be assigned to the regular brush collection service in order to clear up the backlog of brush that exists in other areas of the City. "Regular brush collection is up 70% this year and collection has been slower than we would like, " Dreckmann added. "We are going to take this opportunity to put added staff on brush in hopes getting caught up." Residents are reminded that if they hire a contractor to cut trees and brush that they must make arrangements with that contractor to remove the brush. Material cut by contractors will not be collected. Residents can also bring their brush to the drop off sites at 1501 W. Badger Rd. and 4602 Sycamore Av. The sites are open seven days a week from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday evenings until 8 p.m. Information on the drop off sites and brush collection is available at www.cityofmadison.com/streets.
