Sidewalk Clearing Deadline Extended
The City of Madison has extended the deadline for clearing sidewalks from Noon on Thursday to 8:00 a.m. on Friday. "Due to the magnitude of the snow storm, the deadline for clearing snow and ice from public sidewalks has been extended to 8:00 a.m., Friday, December 11, 2009," said George Hank, the City's Director of Building Inspection. "Even though the deadline has been extended, it is in your best interest to remove the snow as soon as possible before it is packed down by pedestrians." Ice that cannot be removed must be treated with sand to provide traction. This will allow pedestrians to get through and allow letter carriers to deliver the mail. "If you are able, please help your neighbors who may be incapable of clearing their walks. Many of the service agencies that assist the elderly with snow removal are swamped because of the volume of snow that has fallen," Mayor Dave Cieslewicz said. "If you have time, you may want to contact these agencies and volunteer to assist others." Agencies that can assist the elderly with snow shoveling include; Madison Senior Center 266-6581 Area Agency on Aging 261-9930 East Madison/Monona Senior Coalition 233-3100 North /Eastside Senior Coalition 243-5252 South Madison Coalition 251-8405 West Madison Senior Coalition 238-7368
